Unit Title: Health and Safety Awareness

Purpose and Aim:

To equip care workers with the skills and knowledge to understand the general and specific health and safety requirements of working in a health or social care environment.

The course focuses specifically on a number of key areas which include:

  • Legislation relating to health and safety in the workplace
  • Personal and employer responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of service users
  • Organisational policies and procedures
  • Application of organisational policies and procedures
  • Risk assessment
  • Legal and operational aspects of the health and Safety at Work Act 1974 with reference to its application in the workplace
  • Practical issues that need to be addressed if health and safety in the workplace is to be maintained
  • How fire starts and spreads
  • Main risks relating to the spread of infection
  • Requirements for manual handling as defined in the 1992 Regulations
  • Ways to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling operations


This unit is assessed through written and oral questions.
